Hmmmm To VPS or Not To VPS

Ok, so I'm looking around for VPS Hosting.  The journey is pain staking as it appears there is a group of seemingly top class providers all with only minor differences.  At the moment I'm looking about $20-$50 for about 5GB storage, 750GB/Month bandwidth, up to 100mbps, about 1GB RAM,  hahah what else is there.

I really wish the process was a little bit easier.  The investment is a tough because you either try make the savings though paying for a year at a time, which obviously comes with some risks.  Or you spend the extra time researching, to make sure you are onto exactly the right service at the right price point.

I guess my purpose and reason for getting the hosting is important.  The plan is to start up some blogs, eCommerce sites, and what ever I can think of.  At this stage I have the basic skills to set up some CMSs, but probably not enough to quit my day job.  I do have some other skills in photography, and I did just get a really nice camera that I'll start using to write short documentary films soon.  All of these could do with a website.  I have an AdSense account, so I can hook them up and hopefully see some fruits to this $500 dollar a year investment in hosting.  Oh, and don't forget the yearly cost of the domains also.

I wish there was more help out there for me.  If you read this and think you can help me in the right direction, please do.  It will be most appreciated.

Cheers Peeps!

My first attempt at making a video, not great but its a start.

OK, so I got this awesome camera the other day.  A Canon 650D.  The reason being is that I want to start making documentary films.  As an Asian Studies student (graduated now) I really want to be doing something more closely related to my passion for Asian culture and society.

Below is my first attempt.  To clarify, I'm really not that impressed.  The standard lens isn't that great and the tripod is designed for photography, not film.  But all good, I just need to develop filming techniques that don't rely on focus pulling, zooming and consistent panning or pitching.  Anyway, check it out peeps, and please be sure to tell me just how bad it is :P

The Woes of Wage Slavery

Why oh why do I feel this despair. For what fate have I begged to be blessed in this abyss? There be any other name to offer, I cannot find it. And to my finality I find it discouraging. Lost as it were, into what is painful and unknown. So lost in this world. What is it to want end but not be offered? persist and continue, with depressing inevitability.

SEO and Social Marketing Suggestions I provided To a Customer Today = Insightful

Below is an email I sent to a client today.  I was quite happy with what I came up with and thought I might share it with the world.  Please feel free to comment should you have additional input in to the subject.  Obviously, I have removed names and so forth to maintain the anonymity of the client.  Happy reading :)

Dear ******,

I do hope that my email finds you well.

Further to our previous discussion regarding social media and the marketing of your website, I have had some time to think about different strategies and come up with some suggestions.  The services suggested below are not something we will directly be able to assist you with, but simply some recommendations and suggestions that could be of use.  Bear in mind that there is no one fix that will accomplish the results you are looking for, and any solutions really need to be holistic in approach.  You might like to read this when you have some free time as it is a long email and covers a wide range of different strategies.

1.  Yelp has 1 bad review.

From what ***** tells me, previous customers had posted positive reviews, but Yelp had the nerve to pull them down saying they weren't legitimate.  It is my understanding that Yelp has a lot of dissatisfied users and you might be better off removing your Yelp account all together.  Some say that there is no such thing as bad publicity, but if you don't have much user contributed content, and what you do have is a bad review, I would suggest that this does not represent your company that well.  You might like to have a read of www.yelp-sucks.com for more stories of the bad business practices performed by this web service.

2.  Google+ Local for reviews and as a Yelp replacement.

I just had a quick look at your G+ Local page and it looks to be pumping.  Nice work.  I think this is a far better replacement for Yelp.  That being said, the last review was placed 7 months ago.  It would be great if you could try make a target of 1 to 5 reviews on G+ Local a month.  You have 18 reviews but you really want 50 to 100.

3.  Facebook page needs more posts directly from your website.

Posting links from your website will help in establishing back links that Google will recognize, lifting your Google ranking.  I believe I may have suggested it previously, that you could easily share some select content and products from the website direct to your Facebook page maybe twice a week.  This will be a small push to lift your Google reputation.

4.  Back link swaps with other websites via a links page on your website.

With an added links page on your website you would be able to initiate back link swaps with other websites.  This would involve communicating with other like minded website owners and exchanging links to provide on eachother's respective websites.  However,  ****** has informed me that this method is not really effective in this day and age, being swamped by the likes of Facebook and other mass social media providers.  For the effort put in we don't believe this will provide you with the coverage you are looking for.

5.  Registering your website with AOL, and Yahoo directory listings.

This idea stems back to the good old days before Google.  Yahoo evaluates websites on a case by case basis and includes them in listings, much like the Yellow Pages.  Users can search by different categories for whatever they might be interested, unlike direct keyword searches and mass website evaluation (as in Google search).  That being said, you may need to search a bit further to find the many other listings out there for this strategy to be effective.  I suggest that Yahoo and AOL would be a good first step, but you would definitely need to add your site to potentially dozens of different listings to see real results.

6.  Contribute to community group pages, forums, and blogs for additional back links.

This strategy holds a lot of potential if enough time and effort is put into the task.  Basically you (or perhaps an intern/work experience student) could visit lots of different community pages from a variety of different related industries and interests.  By contributing to discussions (and adding your link to posts) the users that read them will no doubt click back to your website, especially if they believe your interest in the community group is genuine.  As you might imagine, a lot of companies post more or less fake contributions to get their link out there.  However, should you actually interact with these groups, you will start to build relationships with users that actually trust you.

7.  Contribute to blogs as a guest blogger (yes that means a bit of creative writing).

In-line with the above point, by contributing to "respected and well known" blogs as a guest blogger, you have the opportunity of getting your voice to a large audience.  And, there is much more potential than simply contributing to discussions and communicating with commenters.  For this to work you would need to post articles to more than 1 blog (perhaps 5 - 10, the sky is the limit).  It would also be best if the articles were unique, but I could imagine there is still a benefit to posting the same article to a variety of blogs.  What is most important is that you guest blog to a wide range of fields and interest groups.  There is little benefit in posting to 10 blogs in the same field, as a lot of the visiting users visit the same blogs.  By diversifying you will reach a wider range of customers/users.  Moreover, by guest blogging you place yourself as a professional in your field, and not just a commenter.  That alone must carry some weight over just commenting and discussing other people's articles.

8.  Start a Blog, and update it REGULARLY.

This is also an option, but you might be best geared to start with trying to get some good slots on other well recognized blogs first.

9.  More AdWords and Facebook campaigns.

Advertising campaigns can have substantial benefits; however, you need to be sure you have just the right keywords in order for these to work (definitely worth getting advise from a professional in this case).  Also, the problem with this sort of method is that every man and his dog is paying for these services, as it is the easy way out, so you could find yourself spending a lot of money for nothing.  Any investment like this needs to be well researched or trusted to a company that has a good track record.  All things being considered, I believe a small investment in web ad campaigns isn't a bad idea, but the previous suggestions of contribution and interaction are far more positive and don't cost anything.  The long and slow road will build a solid base where as an Ad campaign dies the moment you stop paying.

10.  Monthly or bi-monthly newsletters.

This is definitely something you can do in house, but depends entirely on the size of your email mailing list.  If its small I would suggest there is little benefit to expending the time on creating the newsletters.

Well that just about covers it.  And just to reiterate, these are simply suggestions.  We cannot guarantee that any of these will work, especially if only 1 or 2 strategies are tried.  The process needs to be holistic and needs to be a long term vision, which will no doubt change at least a part of the way you deal with marketing from a web perspective.

In the meantime, should you require any additional information or assistance at any time, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best regards,
BenC

One thing I forgot to add to this was the importance of YouTube, and producing short films that are fun and informative.  It really gives a face to the company and its staff.  I doubt he would have gone for that anyway.

I look forward to continuing this discussion with my fellow bloggers.

Peace Out.

Over the boat already. I used to love Bangkok boats!

Blast From The Past

Below is just a little blast from my past.  The few days prior to me visiting Thailand more than 5 years ago now seems kind of funny.  Following that I went back to Australia to study, then came back to Thailand, which is where I have been living for about a year and a half.  Fascinating where life takes us.  Click the text to go to that part of my archive and read the epic journey I faced when I was so much younger.

An anxious wait

Today has seen a new sense of urgency for my leaving. I only have 3 days until I leave the country and I would really just like to get my journey underway. My room still hasn't been filled yet but I have lost all care for this god-forsaken room. My budget seems to be inline anyway so I just want to get going.I had the pleasure of briefly going out on the town last night. 2 of my house mates and I went to a pub in Brisbane. I am terrible at having a good time when I go out. Always concerned about peoples thoughts and opinions. The night ended after 35 dollars of bear, Macca's and a train home.I put my sudden pessimism down to last night. I'm just not party material at the moment. Maybe my trip will change that. Then again maybe partying isn't really a skill I'm interested in.

New Found Inspiration To Be Creative

Saphan Thaksin BTS Station, Bangkok

I'm so excited.  Just 10.5 hrs left of work and I'm off to buy myself a Camera with my GF.  The reason for this relatively spontaneous buy is that I have decided I want to start writing films.  I'm 32 and you would imagine that I should almost have had my career sorted out by now.  However, that is most definitely not the case.  And as strange as this directions sounds, I feel like this will be the perfect new hobby with the potential of expanding beyond just being a hobby.

It's astounding the extent to which independent artists can produce films of a professional standard.  In some cases we can even do better than the professional film industry.  Can you believe it?  Just search out there for anything relating to short films (my top youtube key words would be: Final Cut Pro, "edited in", short film, 550D).  There is a lot out there, you just have to look.

So my first films will be camera tests and little lessons to get me up to scratch on my standard camera techniques and editing.  But, following this small stint I plan on writing a short documentary about a friend of mine.  She doesn't know it yet, but this is what I am working on.

Prior to doing so I really want to try build a presense on the net.  So, please feel free to say hi and offer me any advise you can.  Also, if you would like to do a links swap, please just ask.  We're all in this together.

Peace.

P.S.  I wrote this at work and can't be assed proof reading so sorry for the typos and spelling errors.

I'm back. Where did I go?

This is brief, but a warm sense is flowing and I'm glad to be back.  This platform is back in my hands and I'm looking forward to updating more regularly.

For those just visiting now for the first time, please feel free to check out my archives.  Lots of partly interesting stories from years passed.  I can't wait to let you all know what has been happening.

An issue with religion

The common understanding of "I don't mind if you have your own religion, but just don't shove it down my throat", tells me that people are entitled to their beliefs regardless of other peoples beliefs, and moreover, even if that said belief is just plain wrong.  Why do we allow this sort of thing in society?  It seems that the many non-believers accept the belief of believers, even though the non-believer openly disagrees with the religion.  Why is this???

Personally, I'm of the belief we need to pull our heads out of our asses and say something.  For instance, a Christian might argue that I am unable to disprove Christianity, but the amount of religions in existence tells me that all religions represent something, but that is rarely God.  So why should I say, "believe what you want, just don't tell me about it"?  The world will get no where with this sort of attitude.  I'm not saying Christians and Muslims should engage in yet more conflict, on the grounds that one is right and the other wrong;  what I am saying is that Christians, Muslims, Buddhist or otherwise should come to find that all of their beliefs are based on stories, myth, and HUMANS.  If the intention of religion is to define GOD, or comprehend the beginning of existence, which it should, then religion should be based on much more evidence than faith and heresay...

If we don't do something about it the world will surely pass along the sands of time unchanged, when progressive improvement towards logic and rational thinking is what we need.

Cheers

Nengi

In trying to understand a difference of opinion.

I'm tired of having discussions or debates that rarely go anywhere.  In the instance of talking to my friends, we share a common belief and understanding, so when we talk we agree, and we get nowhere.  Whether it be about religion, society, westernism, etc, we can never make progress in our discussions because we all agree.  However, when I leave my familiar surroundings and return to my place of birth, and my "old life", I find myself conflicted with the old status quo, that seems to have changed very little.  In these discussion, we rarely make any progress, because my beliefs, which I hope are sound, make no impact on those that are happy with their way of life.  I was told the other day, "why don't you just let people live the way they want to live?".  And my answer to that is, why should we let something that seems so wrong perpetuate and become an underlying problem of western society.

I would explain more now, but I really need to pull my ideas together and elaborate further in the near future.  Stay tuned (me, anyway, as I know no one reads this anymore)

Actually, all God has to be able to do is be better than humans. I think God might have that one in the bag. But God doesn't have to exist now. • Brent Silby -Maestro B Current leading theories in physics suggest that the universe's existence was necessarily uncaused. The last gap for God to hide (13 billion years ago at the big bang) has now been filled with a theory.

    • Ben C Many philosophers argue that if all effects have a cause then there must have been an an effect without a cause, as to avoid infinity, and that "anti-cause, un-caused entity, etc" is God. So I think that "necessarily uncaused", represents causality in our sense of reality, not from a "godly reality". hahah if that makes any sense. :P
      Monday at 16:04 · · 1 person ·

    • Brent Silby -Maestro B They don't put it quite like that. For a philosopher, stating that "ALL effects have a cause" and also stating "one effect is uncaused" is a problem because the two statements yield a contradiction. Philosophers don't like contradictions. But you are correct in the idea that all (non quantum) events following the first, uncaused event have causes. The first event was an uncaused quantum event.
      Monday at 16:49 ·

    • Brent Silby -Maestro B To add, I don't think many philosophers would claim that the uncaused event is God. I certainly don't know any Philosophers who would make that claim (and as a Philosopher and teacher of the subject, I've come to know a few over the years). Why bring God into the equation? Let's halt the regress at the Big Bang. The Big Bang was the first uncaused event. There's no need for God.
      Monday at 16:52 ·

    • Ben C Yeah but that doesn't answer any questions, does it? I.E. the big bang is uncaused, and we don't need God, so don't bother asking what was before the big bang, and where the universe comes from. Sounds like lazy philosophers to me, or just ones that like a meta-physical God like thing.

    • Ben C Yeah I must admit Brent, I'm not a big fan of the idea that God is a simple answer, because the God part of it aims to look toward the metaphysical that we will never be able to explain with science. Perhaps God just doesn't want us to know about IT. At any cost, a physicist can tell me about as much about God as a Christian can, and that isn't a good start. Sometimes you just have to look inside and see what your consciousness tells you, just be sure not to believe everything you tell yourself.

    • Brent Silby -Maestro B Thing is, Jason, that faith leads to ignorance and lack of inquiry, which ultimately leads to human suffering. Reason has given us the ability to understand the intricate nature of our environmental ecosystems. Reason has provided answers to the problem and we know how to fix the environment. Faith, however, prevents us doing anything because it provides the unreasoned assumption that "all will be okay...its part of God's plan".

I'm glad we are looking in the same direction, albeit from differing perspectives. You are right, I have always referred to that thing, entity, event, what ever it's composition, as GOD. I like the idea of a loving God that actively plays a role in our daily lives, but I highly doubt this to be possible. GOD must surely be something way beyond our way of thinking, as meagre human beings. Many philosophers face the problem of not accepting what they can't know. For example, I heard a story the other day of a universe photographed by Hubble that was 4 times bigger than should be possible according to our understanding of physics. Meaning, 6 billion people and 10000 years of evolution and we still have some serious issues with the consistency of our total knowledge base. I'm all for Science, as it is as close as we can get, but a little bit of scepticism goes a long way. Contradictions exist in Science, spirituality, beliefs, knowledge, and any other characteristic of life, the universe and everything.

In addition, the macro scale is where we try to generalise about this or that, truth is important, and in most cases quite necessary. However, in the micro, say for instance the relationship between 2 people where the line of truth is blurred, truth then has the potential to be a complication. As for religious or spiritual belief, that is personal, and everyone's experience is unique, albeit many groups follow single religions, but everyone's experience is different

Just for the record I am quite anti-religion, which does not make me an Atheist because I am a firm believer that there is more to this universe than just this universe. If the physicist tells us that our universe is one of many in different dimensions, then its possible there is something beyond that, governing things from above. Ultimately, who knows, but we can imagine :)

There is surely not enough Agnosticism in this world. Imagine my view from atop this fence looking down at the rest of them bickering and squabbling.
